How to include Hebrew (or another language that uses more than just ascii characters) in Radio Userland posts: open the Radio application, go to Window -> radio.root, and find the entry user.html.perfs.isoFilter. Set it to “false” and the processMacros function will stop molesting your text.

I think editing the HTML source can be easier sometimes.

Observer: Men redundant? Now we

Observer: Men redundant? Now we don’t need women either – scientists working on an artificial womb. Cool. However, bio-ethicists react in a typical, forward-looking fashion, by regurgitating B-movie anxieties. The article quotes Dr Scott Gelfand, organizer of a conference titled ‘The End of Natural Motherhood?‘ as saying: ‘Some feminists even say artificial wombs mean men could eliminate women from the planet and still perpetuate our species. That’s a bit alarmist. Nevertheless, this subject clearly raises strong feelings. [ via the Transhuman Space mailing list ]

The Onion: Judge Orders God To Break Up Into Smaller Deities

Two useful Doc Javascript columns

Two useful Doc Javascript columns: Scripting the File System, Part I (doesn’t look like he got around to Part II just yet, but I guess there are docs) and OLE Automation in JavaScript.

I’m thinking of writing a HTA version of my Word2HTML converter (or something else that parses Word into some more useful format, like pod). I wonder why there aren’t any people actually writing HTAs anywhere – Internet Explorer 5 (or is it 4+) is probably a much more widely deployed scripting engine than Perl, Python and Java.

Do people think that Javascript sucks or something?

An article about the exploration

An article about the exploration of Pluto from the NY Times (free registration required), reprinted in yesterday’s Haaretz, discusses a proposed NASA mission and also how scientists pieced together what we do know about that planet by basically looking very carefully at a dim blob of light in the night sky.

The article provides plenty of inspiration for Science Fiction stories or roleplaying games, especially modern or even futuristic Call of Cthulhu / Delta Green games: Apparently, One of the things adding urgency to the NASA mission is the concern that by 2020, the atmosphere of Pluto will freeze entirely, and not thaw until it comes back along it’s elliptic orbit around 2200…

More about Pluto from the New York Times.
