October, 1888

Jack the Ripper – Timeline (2 of 6) starts conveniently on October 1st, where Theodore’s letter has conveniently placed our campaign in time.

On October 1st, the following (Ripper related stuff – I could do with a more universal timeline…) occured:

  • Coroner Wynne E. Baxter begins inquest into the murder of Elizabeth Stride at the Vestry Hall, Cable Street. Adjourned until the 2nd.
  • The morning issue of the Daily News first prints the text of the Dear Boss letter.
  • Thomas Coram finds a bloodstained knife in Whitechapel Road, with a blade of about 9 inches.
  • The Financial News contributes £300 toward a reward for the capture of the murderer.
  • Lord Mayor offers £500 reward.
  • Sir Alfred Kirby offers £100 reward and 50 militia men to help apprehend the criminal. Offer declined.
  • Queen Victoria telephones the Home Office at 3:30 pm and expresses her shock at the murders.
  • The ‘Saucy Jacky’ postcard is received at the Central News Agency.
  • Michael Kidney arrives drunk at Leman Street Police Station, blaming the PC on duty at the time of Stride’s murder, and asking to speak with a detective.
  • The Star prints the text of the Saucy Jacky postcard in the evening edition.
  • The first of many imitative hoax letters is received, with the word “Boss” hastily inserted in play of “The City Police.”

In short, Rippermania is at it’s peak.

New Campaign note

Our new campaign just had one session (Monday), and Israel even did a web page for his character, Theodore Alexius Victor Warner the Third, with a session summary, saving me the need to recap.

Back from the Con, into the Future!

ICon is over now, I can sort-of breath, and now it’s time to dive into two new campaigns!

The one I’m GMing is a late Victorian game, and the more I learn about the period, the more inadequate I feel my research is. Speaking of research, here’s a nicely relevant article (since one of my players wants to be a bastard scion of the throne, and legitimate heir…), about
New Kings on Old Thrones.

From Turin to Glorantha

The Mana Bros. Cthulhu Pages is an Italian website (in English) which has lots of material for Call of Cthulhu, including a Delta Green campaign set in Vietnam and a guide to Turin and Italy during the 1920s.

It’s a well-written site, with excellent graphics and quotes.

One section of their site, Niteside Dreams, describes an alternate CoC setting that mixes Noir and modern Magic with the Mythos. As a reference for mundane magic, they point to a big Sandy Peterson article about Sorcery in Runequest (easily adaptable to CoC). That article is hosted on David Dunham’s site, which has an impressive collection of Glorantha material. Dunham is the creator of the Gloranthan computer game, King of Dragon Pass.
