The Ending of the Watchmen movie

Zack Snyder‘s revelation that the ending of the Watchmen movie will omit the extradimensional cephalophod of the comics has inspired an <airquotes>internet backlash</airquotes>:

save the squid, destroy New York

[via LMG, I think].

Reading the interview in the first link I think they’ve actually got a more elegant ending than the one in the graphic novel. Certainly better than Sam Hamm’s solution (repeat after me: Time Travel is never the answer).

And I like the trailer better, after repeated viewings. It’s easy to be pessimistic and cynical, but let’s not forget that Zack Snyder is second only to Robert Rodriguez in realizing a comic creator’s artistic vision faithfully on film.

Uhh.

Watchmen – Second Theatrical Trailer

YouTube – Watchmen – Second Full New Trailer HD.

Here you go.

I’m actually starting to get V for Vendetta flashes – the feeling that even though it’s something recognizable as that awesome thing I loved in my youth, it might not be the ultimate rapture of the nerds. Perhaps it’s just that they didn’t use that Smashing Pumpkins track this time…

Two hours, 43 minutes

A few things on the wake of the burst of Watchmen fanboy enthusiasm shared at ICon. First, I am stupid – the easy-to-remember release date of 03-06-09 isn’t in June, it’s in March – American dates are silly that way. Second, imdb lists the movie as aka Watchmen: The IMAX Experience, so Roly is right – this really will necessitate a trip to the lands beyond Haifa.

Also, looking around for info about the movie’s length, I found a report from a press screening describing 25 minutes of the movie Zack Snyder showed to journalists, and including audio recordings of what he said [1] [2] [3] [4].

Also, here’s the full Watchmen panel from the San Diego Comic-Con, with Snyder, Dave Gibbons and the leading actors.
