Geek Injuries

The week is young and I already bear two geek-related injuries:

  • Nasty paper-cut from trying to right a fallen pile of Meimad back issues – that glossy paper is sharp!
  • Skin chaffing in the palm from carrying too many bags of comics up the stairs at the same time.

What next, spraining a wrist from rolling dice too vigorously?

Optical Evil

Via Bruce Sterling, an evil optical illusion (below the cut). Also, while googling for a reference, I found this.

Ticket to Ride

Ticket to Ride (a professional board game) has won the Diana Jones award for “Excellence in Gaming”, beating the two other nominees, two small-publisher (“indie”) roleplaying games, Dogs in the Vineyard and Code of Unaris.
Now, I blame berevity: calling it an award for “Excellence in Roleplay Gaming” would be too clumsy, even though that was sort-of how the thing was interpreted in past years, as far as I understood the results.
The broadness of the thing does make it look a bit silly, like nominating two indie graphic novels and a cofee-table photography book for an “excellence in visual art” award.
(Shiffer snarked about the award here).

Fuzzy Dice

plush d20
A company called Toy Vault makes fuzzy dice for gamers. There’s a detailed list at SJ Games’ Warehouse 23. I wonder how big an entire set of polyhedrals would be.

The conservation of Entropy

When the light bulb in the bathroom burnt out last Thursday, it was the last straw.
On Sunday I went and got 80 shekels worth of light bulbs; That’s 6 ordinary 4-shekel bulbs, plus a “value” pack of 2(!) halogene bulbs parceled with 2 more 4-shekel bulbs.
I replaced the light in the bathroom; I replaced the light in the bedroom, dead for 3 months or so. I replaced the halogene in the living room, which had burnt out just after I’d moved in.

An hour later, the neon in the kitchen gives in.
